IDS 105 Project Guidelines and Rubric
Competencies
In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competencies:
Describe the factors that influence one’s perception of social justice
Examine the impact of intercultural competence on collaboration and communication
Utilize interpersonal communication strategies to navigate conflict
Overview
In this course, you have explored your identity and how it pertains to justice, fairness, and equality in the classroom, the community, and your personal and professional lives. For this project, you will address aspects of social justice, intercultural competence in collaboration and communication, and how you use those interpersonal communication strategies to navigate conflict in your personal and professional lives.
Scenario
Scenario-based learning provides an opportunity for you to practice what you learn by applying it to a simulated real-world scenario. Review the scenarios detailed in the Project Scenario document, linked in the Supporting Materials section. Choose one of the scenarios provided in the document to focus on for your project. Read each of them carefully because you will use the same scenario for all parts of your Project Template.
Directions
Based on your chosen scenario, respond to each part of the project, listed below, using the Project Template, which is linked in the What to Submit section. Each scenario will require you to demonstrate your understanding of social justice, the importance of cultural fluency and self-awareness, the benefits of intercultural collaboration and communication, and interpersonal communication strategies to navigate conflict. You will use the Project Scenarios, linked in the Supporting Materials section, to support your work on the project.
Note: Incorporate the feedback you received from your instructor on your draft assignments to improve your final submission.
Specifically, you must address the following:
Part One: Social Justice
In this section, you will provide a general introduction to social justice. Address the following criteria in Part One:
1. Explain the difference between justice, fairness, and equality as they apply in the chosen scenario.
2. Describe how bias could impact social justice in the chosen scenario.
3. Explain how different narratives circulating in society could impact how social justice is perceived in the chosen scenario.
4. Explain the core principles of social justice in the chosen scenario.
Part Two: Elevating Your Cultural Fluency
In this section, you will explore the importance of cultural fluency to your self-awareness, and apply it in the scenario. Address the following criteria in Part Two:
1. Describe how cultural fluency benefits your self-awareness.
2. Describe how to demonstrate cultural fluency in the chosen scenario.

Part Three: Intercultural Communication and Collaboration
In this section, you will expand on the benefits of intercultural communication and collaboration in the scenario. Address the following criteria in Part Three:
1. Explain how mindfulness of different cultures could improve communication with individuals in the chosen scenario.
2. Describe how familiarity with diverse backgrounds can positively influence communication in the chosen scenario.
3. Explain why an awareness of diversity is beneficial to collaboration in the chosen scenario.
Part Four: Communication Strategies to Navigate Conflict
In this section, you will apply the concepts you shared in Parts One, Two, and Three to describe strategies you will use to navigate the conflict represented in the scenario. Address the following criteria in Part Four: 1. Describe the components of the conflict represented in the chosen scenario.
2. Describe different interpersonal communication strategies that could help resolve the conflict.
3. Choose a communication strategy to resolve the conflict. Include an explanation of why you chose that communication strategy.
4. Describe the potential communication challenges that may arise in the chosen scenario.
5. Describe both the benefits and challenges of using restorative practices to address the conflict in the chosen scenario.
What to Submit
To complete this project, you must submit the following:
Incorporate the feedback you received from your instructor on your draft assignments and submit your completed Project Template for grading. Your completed Project Template should be a 3- to 5-page Microsoft Word document. No sources are required.
Although Brightspace allows the addition of video notes in assignment submissions, you may not use the Video Note tool to complete this assignment.
