Take-Home Exam – Autumn 2021 22 Assessment Period
You will find instructions for this assessment on the second page below.
Start date: xxxx 2022 Time xxxx
Deadline: xxxx 2022 Time xxxx
We do not expect students to work throughout the duration of a 24-hour take-home exam. As a rough guide, for an assessment of this type we would normally expect students to spend approximately 120 minutes per 1000 words to complete their answers.
Word Limit:
Some questions may have word limits. These may be expressed as a limit e.g. 1500 words or a range e.g. between 250-300 words. Do not exceed the maximum word limit as a deduction of 5% will apply to any submission containing overlength answers.
Academic misconduct
This is a take-home exam. However, the same rules about academic misconduct that apply to your coursework also apply to this exam. Examples of academic misconduct include:
Plagiarism: Representing another person’s work or ideas as one’s own, for example, copying directly from online or other sources.
Collusion: In the context of this exam, collusion means enlisting the help of friends, native speakers, other students to answer questions.
Personation: Asking someone else to do the exam for you.
The penalties for academic misconduct are severe: for more information on the University’s policy and procedures in respect of academic misconduct, see: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/academicservices/qualitymanual/assessment/academic-misconduct.aspx.
You may also wish to look at the guidance issued by the Students’ Union: https://www.su.nottingham.ac.uk/advice/help-with-your-course/academic-misconduct/
You have been provided with two film clips on the module’s Moodle page, the first (Clip A) lasting approximately seven minutes and the second (Clip B) lasting approximately eight minutes.
You are required to write two short essays, one devoted to each of the clips, discussing features of interest in the music tracks, and the relationship of the music to other elements of the films (e.g. visual images, narrative, dialogue, sound effects). Where appropriate, your answers should demonstrate an awareness of relevant general issues in the function and interpretation of film music.
You are not required to compare the clips to each other, though you may do so if you wish.
The combined length of the two essays should be in the range of 1250 1500 words
