Outline Of The Task

A report and analysis of one video ‘case study’ interaction with a service user in a health and social care setting. The report will include an evaluation of communication techniques and the principles of biomedical ethics in context.

This assignment has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your achievement of the following module learning outcomes:

LO1 Identify the basic ethical principles in Health and Social Care.

LO2 Appraise the role of self in therapeutic relationships and identify factors that influence verbal and non-verbal communication.

LO3 Understand the importance of communication skills in Health and Social Care.

  • Introduction (250 words)
  • Provide an introduction to your report, ensuring that you cover the following three points:
  • Context – Outline the importance of understanding key features of a therapeutic relationship and learning by observing others to inform future practice.
  • Purpose – Identify the aim of the case study to develop knowledge of communication and ethics.
  • Approach – Indicate which theoretical tools are used in the report.
  • Analysis (2000 words)
  • Use the 5R framework of reflection from Bain et al., (2002) to produce a critical analysis of the video case study that you have selected:
  • REPORT: A brief description of the video as well as any communication and ethical issues you observe.
  • RESPOND: Provide your personal response to the situation including your feelings and thoughts about your observations of the video case study as well as any potential questions you may have.
  • RELATE: Discuss your understanding of how the case study you observed, relates to your own knowledge and/or experience of a therapeutic relationship. Identify the factors that influence communication.
  • REASONING: What are the significant factors that underlie the situation? Analyse and evaluate the relevance of theoretical literature on communication and ethical principles to this case study.
  • RECONSTRUCTING: Use the theoretical literature on communication and ethical principles that you have learned to discuss and reframe or reconstruct your future practice drawing conclusion from the previous four stages.
  • Conclusion (250 words)
  • Provide a conclusion to your report, ensuring that you cover the following two points:
  • Summarise the learning from the reflection.
