Registered Nurse to acute high acuity case studies for safe person-centred care.
Rationale
This assessment challenges you to think like a Registered Nurse who is presenting a case study to other GRNs as
part of the GRN program. It provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate RN standards for practice 2.8 nurses
participate in and/or lead collaborative practice, 4.2 collects relevant and accurate information and data to inform
practice, and 4.4 assesses the resources available to inform planning. (NMBA, 2016).
Task Instructions
Assignment Task
This assessment requires you to prepare and present a 12-15 minute case study on one (1) complex care
patient from the list below:
15 year old Abby has been admitted to ICU with meningococcal meningitis.
OR
53 year old Lorenzo has been admitted to ICU with head trauma following a fall while hiking where he hit his
head on a rock, his GCS is 11/15.
OR
44 year old Graham has been brought into ED with acute pancreatitis caused by cholelithiasis.
Full patient Case Studies are provided in the A2 CASE STUDIES folder under the Assessment 2 tab
on Study Desk.
Your presentation will be in first person and must include:
Introduction: Introduce yourself and your patient, their case, and the main points of the case that will be
discussed. (approx. 1 ½ minutes)
Body:

- Use your acquired knowledge of anatomy and physiology to discuss how they apply to the pathophysiology of
your chosen patient’s condition (approx. 2 minutes) - Discuss the signs and symptoms of your chosen patient’s condition and how they are linked to the
pathophysiology of that condition (approx. 2 minutes) - Discuss the nursing health assessments and other health diagnostics and/or procedures that apply to your
chosen patient and their complex condition (approx. 2 minutes) - Use evidence to support a discussion on nursing management of the complex care patient in your chosen case
study – it must be patient-centred, culturally safe, and age appropriate (approx. 4 minutes)
Conclusion: Summarise the main points of the case presentation (approx. 1 ½ minutes)
Prepare a power point to go with your presentation. Your ppt will be visible as you present your case. Use intext
referencing throughout the ppt to support your work (how to do this is included in the How to Do your Case
Presentation video on Study Desk).
NUR3397 – Complex Care Case Study Presentation
- A transcript (typed copy of what has been said) of the presentation, with intext referencing included, must be
submitted. - The link to the cloud recording and password of your oral presentation must be pasted at the top of the
transcript (how to do this is included in the How to Do your Case Presentation video on Study Desk). - A full reference list in APA7 format must be included at the end of the transcript.
Reference Sources: a minimum of eight (8) scholarly sources that are no more than 6 years old must be used.
