Designing an Intrusion Detection System for Communication Networks

Instructions:

  1. Write a 3000-4000 word proposal. The focus should be on system design and its practical
    application.
  2. The communication system can be IoT network, wireless network, cellular network, SDN based
network. You can choose one of these networks as your problem domain.
  3. Structure your proposal as follows:
    a. Abstract (200-300 words): Summarize the proposed design, highlighting key features and
    objectives.
    b. Introduction (300-500 words):
    i. Explain the importance of IDS in communication networks.
ii. Identify key challenges and limitations in current systems.

c. System Requirements (400-600 words):
i. Define functional and non-functional requirements of the proposed IDS.
ii. Highlight the importance of real-time detection, scalability, and low false
positive rates.
d. System Architecture (800-1000 words):
i. Design a comprehensive architecture for the IDS, including:

  1. Data collection modules.
  2. Detection engines (e.g., signature-based, anomaly-based).
  3. Alerting and reporting systems.
ii. Use diagrams or flowcharts for clarity.
    e. Integration of Machine Learning (500-800 words):
    i. Explain how machine learning models (e.g., deep learning, clustering) will
    enhance the system.
ii. Provide examples of datasets and evaluation metrics to be used.
    f. Implementation Challenges and Mitigation Strategies (400-600 words):
    i. Discuss challenges such as computational overhead, encryption, and evolving
    threats.
ii. Propose solutions or trade-offs to address these issues.
    g. Future Scope (300-500 words):
    i. Highlight potential extensions or upgrades to the system.
  4. h. Conclusion (200-300 words):
  5. i. Summarize the design and its significance in securing communication
  6. networks.
  7. Submission Format:
  8. Use IEEE format for citations and references.
  9. Submit the proposal as a PDF document.
  10. Evaluation Criteria (100 Points):
  11. Abstract and Introduction (15 points)
  12. Clarity and feasibility of system requirements (15 points)
  13. Detailed architecture and use of diagrams (25 points)
  14. Integration of machine learning and justification (20 points)
  15. Discussion of challenges and solutions (15 points)
  16. Formatting, originality, and references (10 points) E. Arrangements for submission
Your individualised submission deadline will be available through your assessment submission point.
Although the Assessment Brief on the Module Guide includes details of the standard submission
deadline, in all cases these become individualised for you, and presented to you through the
assessment point itself. This applies to all forms of assessment, with the exception of exams, where the
date and time will be available in MyGlos approximately four weeks in advance, and certain forms of
assessment such as presentations and performances, for which these details will be clarified by your
    tutor.
Your assessment will be submitted online via Moodle. Please name the files you are submitting using
    the convention:
MODULE CODE_ASSESSMENT NUMBER (if more than one)(plus _FILE NUMBER if more than one file is being submitted)
  17. Please ensure you do not use special characters (e.g. brackets, commas, speech marks, question marks, etc.) in the file name.
  18. The Maximum file size for uploading is 100MB.
