Assessment Purpose

The Literature Review is designed to assess two learning outcomes:· 

Synthesise relevant information/data to produce discipline-specific written and spoken genres, incorporating own ideas· Communicate effectively in written and spoken genres, employing academic conventions relevant to the disciplines

Description of Task

Write a literature review which examines the impacts of immigration on a host country and assess whether it has an overall positive or negative effect.

Your literature review must include AT LEAST FIVE of the following sources:

  1. Immigrants, Minorities and Labor Market Competition
  2. The impact of immigration on wages of unskilled workers
  3. The effects of immigration on NHS waiting times
  4. Does immigration affect wages? A look at occupation-level evidence
  5. David Oliver: Falling immigration could destroy the NHS
  6. Migration and pension with international capital mobility
  7. Saving public pensions
  8. The impact of international migration on the public pension system: The case of Portugal
  9. Immigration and house prices in the UK
  10. Measuring the impact of immigration on neighbourhood house prices: evidence from England and Wales
  11. Causal effects of immigration inflows on house prices in a traditionally non-destination countryYou must also search for and include AT LEAST FIVE additional sources

Marking and feedback

Formative

You will participate in a series of weekly writing workshops where you will produce· a reading matrix· a draft introduction· a draft body paragraph· a draft conclusionYou will receive feedback on your work which you must respond to.

Summative

Your literature reviews will be marked by your teacher, with a representative sample moderated by another EAP teacher.You will receive your marks and feedback by the university deadline. You can find this on Tabula > Coursework > Awaiting feedback.

Guidance on the use of AI You must acknowledge GAIT use via a student declaration.You are prohibited from:

  • presenting AI-generated content as your own work (also known as plagiarism)
  • using AI to synthesize (combine) information
  • translating your work from your first language into English.

Submission Submit all formative work- reading matrix, draft introduction, body paragraph and conclusion (including teacher feedback) in ONE Word document (.docx) together with the final version of your literature review.You will lose marks if any piece of work is missing.A late penalty of 5% will be deducted per working day until you submit your work if you miss the deadline.
Eligibility for extensions/ self-certified extensions  This assessment is eligible for extensions and self-certified extensions. Self-certified extensions can be made through Tabula.Please see the guidance in the Student Handbook on Self-certification.
Help and Support You CAN:  

  • check your understanding of the assessment instructions. 
  • clarify the mark scheme. 
  • get feedback on whether your reading matrix is appropriate (whether your notes are presented in the right way)
  • get feedback on ONE draft each of your introduction, one body paragraph and your conclusion
  • ask for help understanding your feedback. 
  • ask your tutor which lesson materials to refer back to for certain skills.  

You CANNOT:  

  • ask for feedback on multiple drafts of your introduction, body paragraph or conclusion
  • ask your tutor to look at a full draft of your essay.
  • ask your tutor to proofread your work
