Purpose
This assignment increases the students’ awareness of the National Patient Safety Goals developed by The Joint Commission. Specifically, this assignment will introduce the Speak Up Initiatives, an award-winning patient safety program designed to help patients promote their own safety by proactively taking charge of their healthcare.
Course outcomes: This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
• CO: 2: Apply the concepts of health promotion and illness prevention in the simulated environment. (PO 2)
• CO: 8: Explain the rationale for selected nursing interventions based upon current nursing literature. (PO 8)

Preparing the Assignment
Follow these guidelines when completing this assignment. Speak with your faculty member if you have questions.
1. Access The Joint Commission website and select a Speak Up brochure or infographic from the following list of topics:
• Stroke
• Memory Problems and Dementia
• Unpaid Caregivers
• Disease Care
• Anesthesia and Sedation
• Medical Imaging
• Safe Surgery
• Infant and Children’s Health
2. Write a short paper reviewing the brochure or infographic.
3. Include current nursing or healthcare journal article to support your critique.
4. Include the following criteria below to structure your critique:
A. Introduction of brochure or infographic (5 points/5%) • Includes brochure/ infographic title from the list of topics.
• Identifies date published
• Describes individuals or groups
• Brochure or infographic properly cited, included on reference list and submitted with assignment B. Summary of brochure or infographic (5 points/5%) – Brochure/infographic citation required
• Review the main topics.
• Includes information to promote communication between patients and healthcare providers.
• Reflects on why this topic is of interest to you?
C. Evaluation of brochure or infographic (20 points/20% total) -Brochure/infographic & nursing article must be cited
• Was the information provided in the brochure/infographic beneficial? Could you incorporate it in your patient education?
• What was done well, and what could have been improved in the brochure/infographic?
• Was the information presented clearly?

D. Clarity of Writing (10 points/10%)
• Information presented in a logical progression.

E. Conclusion (5 points/5%)
• Restates the purpose of the paper.

F. APA style and structure (5points/5%)
• Uses appropriate APA format and is free of errors.
• Paper is no longer than three (3) pages, excluding title page, reference page, and copy of brochure/ infographic.
• Evidence from a recent (5 years) scholarly nursing journal article was integrated within the evaluation of brochure/ infographic section to support your answers.
• Grammar and mechanics are free of errors.
