You have been hired as an independent project manager by the president of ABC, Inc., a privately-owned company, to manage the development of an e-commerce software application. As ABC, Inc. expands its operations, this software is crucial for streamlining online sales and enhancing the customer experience. The project has a 6-month timeline, and the initiation phase is already complete, with the project charter and scope documents in place. Your responsibility is to lead the project into the planning phase by creating essential project management deliverables that will guide the team through the next steps.
After joining ABC, Inc. as the new project manager for the e-commerce software application development project, you have discovered the following factors:
The infrastructure department has a large backlog of competing projects waiting for review and approval, causing possible delays in obtaining the required approvals. The developer responsible for reviewing and approving the software architecture has been hired by a rival firm and will be leaving in 2 weeks. The software and changes needed to enhance computer security cannot run on the existing hardware. The contractor is now asking for an additional $4 million to update all hardware and software used in the project. Divergent client feedback on deliverables is causing ambiguity in the software application design, such as feature creep and requests for software features that are out of scope for the project.
Every project has risks. Project managers must identify and strategize mitigation techniques for the identified risks to ensure the project’s success. A risk register outlines the potential risks, how they will be addressed, and the processes for managing change. Project managers often analyze the register to communicate with stakeholders about any necessary corrective and preventive actions.
In this assessment, you will create a risk register and determine response strategies. Remember that we learned about the CAPA process this week so think carefully about immediate correction actions to each risk as well as longer-term preventive actions and which actions are in the control of the project team and which are not.
Assessment Preparation On the PM/490 Scenario page, review the scenario from the previous assessment before reading the Week 3 addition.
Based on this information, you have been tasked with analyzing these risks and creating a risk register to document and strategize mitigation techniques.
